I know this game is about creating a tight and focused character build but only 12 skills slots seems way too few. Granted this approach does kind of force you to occasionally switch skills and experiment, but I wouldn't have minded another 3 or 6 skill slots.

You do get additional skill slots (and new mutations) with the Blood & Wine DLC. But for the regular game, I didn't really mind the 12 slot limitation. It sort of forces you to choose the kind of "base" Geralt you want to be, but you can always switch stuff in and out depending on how much you know about situations you'll be facing.
For example, I never used the "slow down enemy movement" skill for my crossbow until I went on the Skellige underwater treasure hunting expedition, where it's a huge help for killing drowners and sirens. For that one I also added the "heavy back" skill since I wanted to be able to maximize the stuff I could carry. During this phase I rarely used signs or alchemy skills, so they were easily switched out.
It does, kind of, direct you into playing one specific type of Geralt. Whether that's combat focused, sign focused, or potion focused, the fact that you have to spend points in each given category to unlock the rest of them, mixed with the limited skill slots, you have to take a focused approach to what you want your Geralt to be. Thankfully there are potions to reset your skill points unlike, say, in Oblivion where the enemies level with you and if you didn't understand how the leveling system worked and didn't get good stat increases when you rested/leveled, you could royally screw yourself as the monsters outpaced you in strength. I enjoyed it, but there is definitely a chance you create a very weak, unfocused Geralt who is not good at anything. I divided my points and slots up between too many categories. That happened to me the first time I played and I ended up needing to start over and spending a good bit of time how leveling worked. You have to go through a bit of the blood and wine DLC, including a couple of boss fights, before the side quest opens that will allow you to unlock the additional mutations skills. Considering that I think the starting quest for blood and wine is around 35, you probably aren't going to be able to get that until you are near the end of the main story when you're in your lower 30s.

So I think I finally have an idea of what skills I'd like to focus on. I'm thinking on spending a lot in fast attacks for swords, as well as some skills in potions/brewing, oils (especially these) and bombs. Often times you'll be wearing the wrong gear with the weapon you are using, and then we're back to square one, manually swapping the gear pieces to get the desired set.
Here's my patented 2 step plan to fix gear sets: 1. Allow the same piece of gear to be assigned to multiple equipment slots: instead of dragging and dropping equipment into each slot, and holding it there like some kind of extra inventory, have each slot be assigned a piece of gear by name. this way, you can have the same pieces of gear assigned to multiple sets.
this replaces the "checkbox mechanic" we have in-place currently to NOT swap your gear. Many other MMOs accomplish gear sets in this way: like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 2.
Remove Auxillary Weapon Slot, replace it with 1 free extra equipment slot Mabinogi has evolved past the point of swapping a single weapon with nothing else. Usually you want to swap a few pieces of gear around while you are changing weapons, because these days certain reforges and enchants are only viable with certain weapons. just give everybody a baseline of 2 gear sets to swap between, and then the option to purchase more (i personally think you shouldn't charge for extra equipment slots, but I won't get into that.) Benefits: 1.

because each gear set is specific in which gear is equipped to it, 2. People will be more likely to use extra equipment slots if they are more polished Drawbacks: 1. aesthetically, no more aux weapon slot, or weapons sheathed on your back - this could be remedied by showing the first gear slot's weapons on your back at all times. 2.hotkey management; tabbing between 2 weapons feels nice, but I think I could learn to have a single hotkey for each gear set, or tab between the last 2 I had equipped. -not really a big issue because with "auto weapon slot conversion" you hardly need to manually swap equipment with a hotkey anyway. no free inventory space from extra equipment slots -just buy a bag. Only just realised equip stat buffs vary, then realised I still don't even know how to unlock the extra equip slots on characters (or if they even can be unlocked yet). Yeah, that's what I'm asking, if you can unlock em and how.
